The State Rooms
The heart of Alnwick Castle as a visitor experience, the State Rooms were transformed in the 1850s-1860s for the 4th Duke of Northumberland into a sequence of palatial interiors inspired by the Italian Renaissance. Architect Anthony Salvin and designer Luigi Canina created rooms of extraordinary richness, including the Guard Chamber, Library, Ante Library, Red Drawing Room, and the spectacular Dining Room, all hung with paintings of international importance and furnished with pieces of the highest quality.
The Saloon and Dining Room retain their Canina-designed painted ceilings and architectural ornament, creating an atmosphere of continental grandeur quite unlike any other English country house.
Old Masters Painting Collection
Alnwick Castle holds one of the finest private painting collections in Britain, accumulated by successive Dukes of Northumberland from the 17th century onwards. The collection includes works by Titian, Canaletto, Van Dyck, Tintoretto, Palma Vecchio, and Turner, displayed in the State Rooms in arrangements that reflect both the collecting traditions of the Percy family and the Victorian taste of the 4th Duke who arranged them in their present form.

Harry Potter Broomstick Training
Alnwick Castle's inner courtyard served as the location for Hogwarts School's broomstick flying lesson in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) and the Quidditch pitch was filmed in the castle grounds. The castle offers popular broomstick training sessions for visitors during the main season, led by costumed instructors in the very courtyard where Daniel Radcliffe and other cast members filmed the iconic scene.
The sessions are enormously popular with younger visitors and families and are typically included in the general admission price — first-come, first-served on the day.
The Castle Architecture
Alnwick Castle's exterior is one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture in England, retaining the essential character of a 14th-century baronial fortress despite centuries of modification and restoration. The twin-towered gatehouse, concentric curtain walls, round towers, and the inner and outer baileys create a formidable defensive ensemble whose silhouette has dominated the River Aln valley for seven centuries.
The Victorian restoration and completion works, carried out sensitively by Anthony Salvin who specialised in medieval castle restoration, preserved and in some cases strengthened the medieval character of the exterior while transforming the interior into a modern aristocratic residence.
