Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 2026

Summary: MuseumsUK uses Google Analytics to understand how visitors use our site. Analytics cookies are only set with your consent. We do not collect names, email addresses, or any directly identifying personal data. Local preferences such as saved museums are stored on your device only and never transmitted.

1. Information We Collect

MuseumsUK collects limited data to help us improve the website. We do not collect names, email addresses, or any directly identifying contact information.

Analytics data (with consent)

If you accept analytics cookies, Google Analytics collects:

  • Pages visited and time spent on each page
  • General geographic location (country/region level)
  • Device type, browser, and operating system
  • Referring website or search engine

This data is aggregated and anonymised. IP addresses are anonymised before storage.

What we do NOT collect

  • Names, email addresses, or contact information
  • Precise location or GPS data
  • Any analytics data before you give consent

2. Museum Submission Form

If you use the Submit a Museum form, we collect two categories of data:

Submitter personal data

We collect your name, job title/role, email address, and optionally your phone number. This is used solely to process your submission, contact you if we need clarification, and notify you when your museum is approved or published. It is not used for marketing.

Museum information

We collect the museum's address, contact details, opening hours, admission prices, images, and descriptive content. If approved, this information is published publicly on MuseumsUK as part of the museum's listing.

Legal basis

Processing your submission data is necessary to perform the service you have requested (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(b) — contract performance). We retain submitter contact details for as long as needed to manage the submission and any follow-up, after which they are deleted.

Draft auto-save

The submission form auto-saves your progress in your browser's Local Storage so you can return and complete it later. This draft data stays on your device and is not transmitted to us until you click Submit.

3. Cookies

We use cookies in the following ways:

Strictly necessary cookies

We store your cookie consent preference in your browser's Local Storage so we do not ask you every visit. This is essential to operate the consent banner.

Analytics cookies (optional — consent required)

If you accept, Google Analytics sets cookies to track your session and distinguish returning visits. You can withdraw consent at any time by clicking Cookie Settings in the site footer.

Local Storage (not cookies)

We also use browser Local Storage to save:

  • Saved museums — museums you bookmark are stored locally on your device
  • Theme preference — your light/dark mode choice (if applicable)

This Local Storage data never leaves your device and is not transmitted to our servers or any third party.

4. Third-Party Services

This website uses the following external services:

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to analyse traffic and improve the site. Analytics cookies are only loaded after you give consent. Google processes data on our behalf under a data processing agreement. Review Google's Privacy Policy. You can also opt out site-wide using the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

OpenStreetMap / Leaflet.js

Our interactive map uses OpenStreetMap tiles. When you view the map, your browser makes requests to OpenStreetMap servers. Review OpenStreetMap's Privacy Policy.

Google Fonts

We use Google Fonts for typography. Review Google's Privacy Policy.

External Links

Links to museum websites, Google Maps, and other external sites are governed by their respective privacy policies.

5. Data Sharing

We do not sell or transfer personal data to third parties for their own purposes.

If you consent to analytics, anonymised usage data is processed by Google Analytics under a data processing agreement. Google may transfer this data internationally in accordance with their Privacy Policy and Standard Contractual Clauses.

6. Your Rights (GDPR / UK GDPR)

Under UK and EU data protection law, you have rights including:

  • Right to access your data
  • Right to rectification
  • Right to erasure
  • Right to restrict processing
  • Right to data portability

For analytics data processed by Google Analytics, you may exercise these rights by withdrawing consent (click Cookie Settings in the footer), using the Google Analytics opt-out add-on, or contacting us at the address below. Data stored locally in your browser can be deleted by clearing your browser's Local Storage.

To exercise any of these rights, contact: [email protected]

7. Children's Privacy

This website is suitable for all ages. We do not knowingly collect data from children or adults.

8. Security

This website is served over HTTPS to ensure secure connections. Since we do not collect data, there is no personal data to secure on our servers.

9. Changes to Privacy Policy

We may update this policy occasionally. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date.
