Chatsworth House is one of the most magnificent stately homes in England, the ancestral seat of the Dukes of Devonshire and the Cavendish family for over five centuries. Set in the glorious landscape of the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire, this palatial baroque mansion contains one of Britain's greatest private art collections, amassed over generations by a family renowned as connoisseurs and collectors of extraordinary discernment.
The present house was largely built between 1686 and 1707 for the first Duke of Devonshire, replacing an earlier Elizabethan building. Each subsequent generation added to it—the sixth Duke undertook a major expansion in the early nineteenth century under the supervision of Jeffry Wyatville—and today the house contains 297 rooms filled with Old Master paintings, sculpture, furniture, tapestries, drawings, books, and decorative arts of the highest quality. Works by Rembrandt, Veronese, Frans Hals, and Lucian Freud hang alongside classical sculptures, neoclassical silver, and treasures collected from around the world.
The gardens at Chatsworth are themselves a national treasure. Covering over 100 acres, they were designed in their current form by Capability Brown and later refined by Joseph Paxton, who served as head gardener from 1826 and went on to design the Crystal Palace. The famous Cascade, the Emperor Fountain—the highest gravity-fed fountain in England—the kitchen garden, the rock garden, and the magnificent glasshouse draw hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
Beyond the house and gardens, the Chatsworth estate encompasses a working farm, a maze, adventure playground, and a farmyard aimed at families. The house itself is open from mid-March to late December, with the gardens open for longer. A thriving programme of exhibitions, events, and special displays ensures that every visit offers something new to discover in one of England's truly irreplaceable heritage destinations.

The State Rooms
