The Barber Institute of Fine Arts is one of Britain's finest small art galleries, housing an exceptional collection of European art from the 13th to the 20th century in a purpose-built Art Deco building of outstanding architectural quality. Founded through the generous bequest of Lady Martha Constance Hattie Barber, widow of wealthy Birmingham property developer William Henry Barber, the institute opened in 1939 as part of the University of Birmingham with the specific mission to provide high-quality art and music for the benefit of the university and the people of Birmingham.
