Bolsover Castle is one of England's most extraordinary historic buildings — not a medieval fortification built for defence, but a romantic fantasy castle of the seventeenth century, constructed as a theatrical spectacle of wealth, pleasure, and architectural invention. Perched dramatically on a limestone ridge above the Derbyshire coalfield, it was rebuilt from the ruins of a medieval castle by Sir Charles Cavendish from 1612 onwards, and his son William Cavendish continued and expanded it into one of the most idiosyncratic great houses of Stuart England.
The Little Castle at the heart of the complex is a masterpiece of Jacobean design, its rooms elaborately decorated with carved stonework, painted ceilings, and fireplaces of astonishing intricacy. The allegorical painted ceilings and panelled rooms survive remarkably intact and give a vivid impression of the sophisticated courtly culture of the period. William Cavendish — soldier, horseman, poet, and patron of the arts — used Bolsover as a stage for lavish entertainments, most famously receiving King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria here in 1634 with a masque written by Ben Jonson.
The Riding House — a vast indoor riding school built by William Cavendish, who was the foremost authority on horsemanship in England — is among the earliest purpose-built indoor riding schools in the country and one of the finest surviving examples anywhere in Europe. The ruined terrace range and the elaborate fountain garden known as the Venus Garden complete the ensemble, making Bolsover a site of exceptional historical and artistic interest managed today by English Heritage.
