About

We The Curious is Bristol's award-winning science centre located on the city's historic harbourside, offering over 250 hands-on interactive exhibits, a state-of-the-art planetarium, and a packed programme of live science shows and workshops. Opened in 2000 as '@Bristol' and rebranded in 2017, the centre inspires curiosity about science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the world around us through playful, engaging experiences suitable for all ages.

The three-floor exhibition space transforms abstract scientific concepts into tangible, memorable experiences through interactive installations that encourage experimentation and discovery. Visitors can explore the human body in the All About Us gallery, understand forces and motion through physical challenges, experiment with light and sound, build structures, program robots, and investigate Bristol's unique geography and tidal river. The approach emphasizes learning through doing - touching, building, experimenting, and playing - making complex science accessible and exciting for everyone from toddlers to adults.

The spectacular planetarium features a 15-metre dome screen showing immersive films about space, astronomy, and the natural world. Multiple shows daily take audiences on journeys through the solar system, across the Milky Way, and beyond, using cutting-edge fulldome projection technology that surrounds viewers with stars, planets, and cosmic phenomena. Live presenters guide audiences through the current night sky, explaining constellations, planetary positions, and astronomical events visible from Bristol. The planetarium programming ranges from family-friendly space adventures to in-depth astronomical explorations for enthusiasts.

Daily science shows and demonstrations bring the exhibitions to life with spectacular experiments, explosive reactions, and engaging presentations by knowledgeable science communicators. Regular workshops allow deeper exploration of specific topics through hands-on activities like coding, animation, engineering challenges, and scientific investigations. School holiday programmes feature special themed activities and visiting exhibitions ensure there's always something new to discover. The centre's commitment to accessibility and inclusion means everyone can engage with science regardless of background, age, or ability.

With its harbourside location offering spectacular views, café serving fresh food, well-stocked shop, and proximity to Bristol's other attractions including the SS Great Britain and M Shed, We The Curious provides the perfect combination of education and entertainment for a memorable family day out or fascinating solo exploration.

📅 Best Times to Visit

Quietest: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday

Busiest: Saturday, Sunday

💡 Weekday mornings (10:00-12:00) during term time for quietest experience. Weekends and school holidays very busy - arrive at opening or book timed planetarium show first then explore exhibitions.

💡 Visitor Tips

  • Allow 3-4 hours minimum to explore exhibitions and see a planetarium show. Most visitors spend a full day. Arrive at opening during school holidays and weekends as it gets very busy by midday.
  • Book planetarium shows in advance or immediately upon arrival as popular shows sell out quickly, especially during school holidays. Show schedules are published online and at the entrance.
  • The Curiosity Zone on the first floor is particularly popular with younger children and can get crowded. Visit early or during lunch times for quieter access to the most popular exhibits.
  • Bring a change of clothes for young children as water play areas can be splashy! The early years area and water exhibits are particularly popular with toddlers and pre-schoolers.
  • Download the We The Curious app before visiting for additional exhibit information, challenges, and activities that extend the experience beyond your visit.
  • The Thinker's Space workshops and animation activities require more time - allow 30-60 minutes for these activities. Check daily schedules for specific workshop times and topics.
  • Combine your visit with Bristol's other harbourside attractions - SS Great Britain, M Shed, and Bristol Aquarium are all within 10 minutes' walk. The harbourside area has numerous cafés and restaurants.
  • Annual membership pays for itself with 4 visits and provides unlimited access, member events, and discounts. Great value for local families who want to visit regularly.

All About Us - Human Body Gallery

This fascinating gallery explores the science of human biology through over 30 interactive exhibits investigating how our bodies work, develop, and interact with the world. Walk through a giant model of the human digestive system following food's journey from mouth to intestines. Test reaction times against athletes, measure lung capacity, explore optical illusions revealing how the brain processes visual information, and see thermal imaging showing heat patterns across the body.

Interactive displays explain the heart's pumping mechanism, demonstrate how muscles and bones work together for movement, explore the five senses through experimentation, and investigate the complexity of the human brain. Particularly engaging exhibits allow visitors to see their own skeleton via X-ray imaging, test balance and coordination, explore genetics and inheritance through family resemblance activities, and understand nutrition and health through interactive games.

The gallery addresses development from conception through childhood to aging, reproduction, and the factors affecting human health.

Content balances fun hands-on activities with substantive scientific information, making human biology accessible and personally relevant regardless of prior knowledge.

Curiosity Zone - Forces and Motion

The Curiosity Zone transforms physics from abstract theory into tangible, memorable experiences through over 50 interactive exhibits exploring forces, motion, light, sound, and energy. Build the tallest tower from construction materials and test its stability against vibrations and wind. Race objects down ramps exploring friction, mass, and acceleration.

Launch projectiles investigating trajectory, velocity, and air resistance. Create giant bubbles understanding surface tension and molecular forces. Generate electricity through pedal power, hand cranks, and solar panels demonstrating energy conversion.

Explore magnetism through levitating trains, magnetic sculptures, and compass experiments. Investigate light through prisms, mirrors, lenses, and fiber optics. Create sound waves, measure frequencies, explore harmonics, and understand acoustic principles through musical instruments and resonance experiments.

The gallery includes a shadow wall where bodies cast colored shadows, a tornado tube demonstrating fluid dynamics, and a bed of nails illustrating pressure distribution.

Every exhibit invites experimentation and play while revealing fundamental scientific principles that govern the physical world, making physics thrilling rather than intimidating.

Thinker's Space - Engineering and Making

The Thinker's Space provides resources, tools, and guidance for hands-on making, building, and creative problem-solving. Activities change regularly but typically include robotics programming challenges where visitors code robots to complete tasks, construction challenges using various materials from cardboard to Lego Technic, animation stations for creating stop-motion films, and design challenges requiring creative engineering solutions.

The space features 3D printers, computer stations with design software, craft materials, building sets, and technological tools allowing visitors to bring ideas to life.

Science communicators facilitate activities, provide guidance on techniques, and pose engineering challenges encouraging creative thinking and problem-solving. The emphasis is on process rather than perfect outcomes - experimenting, failing, learning, and trying again. Regular workshops explore specific topics in depth including coding, animation, engineering design, and maker skills.

The space demonstrates that science and technology are creative activities requiring imagination, persistence, and willingness to learn from mistakes. It's particularly popular with older children and teenagers who appreciate the opportunity for more sophisticated creative challenges than typical museum exhibits allow.
