Snowshill Manor is one of the most extraordinary houses in England — a Cotswolds manor crammed from floor to ceiling with one of the most unusual and extensive private collections ever assembled. The house and its astonishing contents were accumulated over decades by the eccentric architect and Arts and Crafts enthusiast Charles Paget Wade between 1919 and his death in 1956. Wade filled 22 rooms with over 22,000 objects drawn from cultures and centuries across the world, driven by a fascination with craftsmanship, colour and the poetry of objects.
The collection defies easy categorisation. Japanese samurai armour fills one room, their lacquered helmets and elaborate cuirasses arranged in silent formation. Elsewhere visitors find Flemish tapestries, spinning wheels, bicycles suspended from ceilings, intricate clocks and musical instruments, hand-painted toys, navigational instruments, weaving equipment, and hundreds of objects whose purpose is not immediately obvious. Wade was less interested in monetary value or rarity than in beauty of making — every object was chosen because it demonstrated exceptional human skill.
Wade himself chose not to live in the manor he had so carefully filled. Instead, he occupied a small cottage called Priest's House in the garden, keeping the manor as a pure showpiece — a personal universe arranged entirely for aesthetic pleasure. He dressed in theatrical costumes and hosted friends who marvelled at both the collection and its creator.
The terraced Arts and Crafts garden surrounding the manor was also designed and planted by Wade, featuring a series of outdoor rooms, ponds, topiary, sculptures and carefully composed views across the Gloucestershire countryside. The interplay between house, collection and landscape creates an experience entirely unlike any conventional museum.
Wade bequeathed the estate to the National Trust in 1951. Photography is not permitted inside the house, a deliberate policy to preserve the intimate, contemplative atmosphere that Wade intended. Snowshill Manor remains one of the Trust's most-loved and genuinely surprising properties.

- Book timed-entry tickets in advance during summer and school holidays — the manor can reach capacity quickly on busy days.
- Photography is not permitted inside the manor. Embrace this — the no-camera rule encourages genuine looking and creates a more contemplative atmosphere.
- Allow at least two and a half hours for a proper visit — rushing through 22 rooms of 22,000 objects means missing much of the magic.
- Talk to the room stewards. They are passionate volunteers with detailed knowledge of the collection and will point out highlights you might otherwise miss.
- The garden is outstanding in its own right. Don't treat it as an afterthought after the house — give it at least 30 minutes.
- Wear comfortable shoes — the manor has uneven stone floors and the garden has steep terraces and steps.
- Visit on a weekday morning outside school holidays for the most peaceful experience of this intimate property.
- Bring cash or card for the tearoom and shop. The tearoom's cakes using local Cotswolds produce are worth saving room for.
