About

Castle Donington Museum preserves the history of Castle Donington village and its surrounding parish in north-west Leicestershire — a community whose story encompasses medieval lordship, river mills, a significant place in the history of motor racing, and a remarkable transformation brought about by proximity to East Midlands Airport.

Castle Donington takes its name from the castle that once dominated the village from high ground above the Trent flood plain. The castle's origins are Norman, and it was held successively by the de Lacy, Lancaster, and other noble families. By the Tudor period the castle had been abandoned and was quarried for building material, leaving only earthworks that can still be traced on the hill above the village. The museum explores this medieval heritage alongside the village's long agricultural history as a community of farmers and craftsmen on the edge of the Charnwood Forest limestone plateau.

The King's Mills on the River Trent, immediately north of the village, were a major milling complex in the medieval and post-medieval period — among the most important water mills in the East Midlands, serving a wide agricultural hinterland with flour milling and later papermaking. The museum holds materials relating to the mills' long history and the Trent-side landscape they inhabited, now largely transformed by reservoir and recreational use.

The twentieth century brought dramatic change to Castle Donington. Donington Park, on the heath to the south of the village, was developed as a motor racing circuit in 1931 and has hosted every variety of competitive motor sport since, from motorcycle racing to the British Grand Prix in 1977 and 1980, the European Motorcycle Grand Prix, and the historic Donington Historic Festival. The circuit is also renowned as the venue for the 1993 European Grand Prix, at which Ayrton Senna produced one of the greatest opening laps in Formula One history.

From 1965, East Midlands Airport — developed on the plateau south of the village — brought international air travel to the region and changed Castle Donington's character fundamentally, creating employment, new residents, and new noise. The museum traces this transformation alongside the village's long-established character, documenting how a community with deep agricultural roots adapted to becoming a hub of the modern aviation economy.

Highlights

🎨

The Norman Castle and its Medieval Lords

Castle Donington takes its name from the Norman castle that once occupied the high ground above the village — a motte-and-bailey stronghold whose history encompasses some of the most important figures of medieval England. The de Lacy family, the Earls of Lincoln, and the Duchy of Lancaster all held the castle in succession.

The museum traces this aristocratic history through documents, heraldic materials, and artefacts relating to the castle site.

By the Tudor period the castle had been abandoned and its stones quarried for other buildings; only the earthworks remain, still visible on the hill.

🎨

The King's Mills on the River Trent

The King's Mills — a major complex of water mills on the River Trent immediately north of the village — were among the most important industrial sites in the East Midlands for several centuries. Their origins lie in the medieval period, when the mills ground grain for a wide agricultural hinterland.

In later centuries milling gave way to papermaking and other uses, and the site evolved in response to changing economic demands.

The museum holds materials relating to the mills' long history, the Trent-side landscape, and the communities of millers, papermakers, and workers who depended on the river's power.

🎨

Donington Park Motor Racing Circuit

Donington Park, developed as a racing circuit on the heath south of the village in 1931, has been one of the most celebrated venues in British motor sport for nearly a century. The museum documents the circuit's history from its origins through motorcycle racing, car racing, and the hosting of the British Grand Prix in 1977 and 1980.

The 1993 European Grand Prix — at which Ayrton Senna's extraordinary first lap has become one of the most celebrated passages in Formula One history — is among the events commemorated.

The circuit's relationship with the village, its impact on local life, and its evolution over decades are explored in depth.

🎨

East Midlands Airport and the Aviation Age

The development of East Midlands Airport on the plateau south of the village from 1965 transformed Castle Donington from a quiet agricultural village into the host community for one of England's major regional airports. The museum documents this transformation: the planning and construction of the airport, its growth from modest regional facility to international freight and charter hub, and the profound changes it brought to the village's character, employment patterns, and physical environment.

The airport's history sits alongside the older layers of the village's story, illustrating a dramatic chapter of late-twentieth-century change.
