The Dewa Roman Experience is Chester's most immersive Roman archaeology attraction, taking visitors on a journey back to Deva — the great legionary fortress established by the Romans around 79 CE that would grow into one of only three permanent legionary fortresses in Roman Britain. Home for centuries to the renowned XX Valeria Victrix Legion, Deva covered 58 acres on a sandstone bluff above the River Dee and served as the strategic hub of Rome's military presence in north-west Britain, facing the still-unconquered territories of Wales and north-west England.
The experience begins with a carefully designed reconstruction of a Roman street, complete with ambient sounds, carefully researched scents, and atmospheric lighting that transport visitors out of the 21st century and into a bustling Roman settlement. Visitors walk past reconstructed shop fronts, a Roman workshop, and typical building interiors before entering the archaeological galleries where genuine Roman finds excavated from beneath Chester's streets are displayed. The combination of theatrical environment and real artefacts creates an educational experience that appeals to visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
The archaeological collections are genuinely exceptional. Chester's particular importance in the Roman world means that excavations have repeatedly uncovered outstanding finds: finely carved tombstones bearing the portraits and epitaphs of legionary soldiers and their families, fragments of Roman monumental inscriptions, imported fine pottery and luxury goods, and evidence of hypocaust underfloor heating systems. The collection of Roman tombstones and funerary monuments is one of the finest from any Roman military site in Britain, providing intimate portraits of the individuals who lived and died at Deva during four centuries of Roman occupation.
A remarkable ship timber from a Roman vessel found in the River Dee adds a maritime dimension to the story, reminding visitors that Deva was also a significant port through which troops, supplies and trade goods moved along the western coast of Roman Britain. The XX Valeria Victrix Legion — whose boar emblem appears repeatedly in the displays — was one of Rome's most distinguished units, serving at Deva from around 87 CE until the late Roman period. The Dewa Roman Experience brings this world vividly alive for school groups, families and independent visitors through its unique blend of theatrical presentation, genuine archaeology, and hands-on interpretation.

💡 Visitor Tips
- Combine your visit with Chester's other outstanding Roman heritage sites — the Roman Amphitheatre (the largest in Britain, free entry) is just 300 metres away, and the city walls incorporate substantial Roman stonework. A full Roman Chester day is easily achievable.
- The walk-through Roman street reconstruction at the start of the experience is highly effective — take your time here before moving into the galleries, as the immersive introduction enhances appreciation of the artefacts that follow.
- The tombstone collection is one of the museum's greatest treasures. Read the translated Latin epitaphs carefully — they reveal the names, ages, home provinces and personal histories of individual soldiers and civilians from nearly 2,000 years ago.
- Chester city centre has no shortage of cafés and restaurants nearby, so plan a lunch break in the city after or before your museum visit. Bridge Street and Eastgate Street offer the most choice within easy walking distance.
- The hands-on activity area is excellent for children — staff can help younger visitors try on replica armour and engage with Roman objects. School groups respond particularly well to the combination of theatrical reconstruction and real artefacts.
- The museum is compact and highly curated — allow 1.5 to 2 hours for a thorough visit, but even an hour gives a satisfying experience. It is an ideal complement to the Grosvenor Museum (10 minutes' walk) for a comprehensive Roman Chester day.
- Parking in Chester city centre can be expensive and limited. The Park and Ride services operating from several points around the city are excellent — check the Cheshire West website for current Park and Ride locations and prices.
- Photography is welcome throughout — the Roman street reconstruction and the tombstone gallery in particular offer exceptional photograph opportunities. The atmospheric lighting in the street section is especially effective with smartphone cameras.

The Dewa Roman Experience holds an important collection of Roman artefacts from Chester and the surrounding region, particularly strong in Roman inscriptions, sculptural tombstones and altars, ceramic assemblages ranging from local coarse wares to imported Samian ware, military equipment and personal finds.
The Roman ship timber from the River Dee is an exceptional find nationally. The collection represents four centuries of legionary occupation at Deva and the civilian community that surrounded the fortress.
