V&A Dundee

V&A Dundee opened in September 2018 as Scotland's first dedicated design museum and the only Victoria and Albert Museum outside London, transforming the city's waterfront and announcing Dundee as a significant global cultural destination. Designed by the celebrated Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the building is itself one of the most remarkable architectural achievements in modern Scotland — a dramatic angular structure clad in rough-cut stone that appears to rise organically from the River Tay, its jagged faceted facades inspired by the dramatic cliff formations of the Scottish coast. Kuma's building creates a powerful dialogue between architecture, landscape, and river, becoming a landmark visible from across the Tay.

The museum celebrates design in all its forms — from Scotland and around the world — through a permanent gallery and a major programme of internationally touring exhibitions. The permanent Scottish Design Galleries are the highlight, showcasing Scottish design innovation across six centuries from 1500 to the present day through more than 300 objects. Highlights include the extraordinary Charles Rennie Mackintosh Oak Room, a complete 1907 interior salvaged from Ingram Street in Glasgow — the only Mackintosh interior on permanent public display outside Glasgow and an object of pilgrimage for design lovers worldwide.

The Scottish Design Galleries trace innovation across textiles, fashion, engineering, ceramics, graphics, digital technology, and product design, demonstrating Scotland's disproportionate impact on design history relative to its size. Objects range from historic tartan textiles and Paisley patterns to iconic industrial products, scientific instruments, and cutting-edge contemporary design. The temporary exhibition programme brings international blockbuster design shows to Scotland that would otherwise only be accessible in London or major European cities.

V&A Dundee has been transformative for the city, catalysing regeneration of the waterfront, boosting tourism significantly, and becoming a symbol of Dundee's wider cultural renaissance. The museum sits at the heart of the redesigned Dundee waterfront alongside the RRS Discovery, the ship that carried Scott and Shackleton to Antarctica, creating one of Scotland's finest cultural destinations.
