Science Mall Interactive Exhibitions

The Science Mall spreads across four floors with over 380 hands-on exhibits that transform abstract scientific concepts into tangible, engaging experiences. Each floor explores different themes: Level 1 focuses on climate change, sustainability, and Earth sciences; Level 2 covers physics, forces, and motion; Level 3 explores human biology, perception, and the brain; Level 4 features technology, engineering, and innovation.

Exhibits range from simple demonstrations to sophisticated interactive installations.

Highlights include the Powering the Future gallery exploring renewable energy with working models of wind turbines, solar panels, and hydroelectric systems visitors can operate.

The BodyWorks section allows exploration of human anatomy, with interactive models showing how organs function. Physics exhibits let visitors create tornadoes, test structural engineering with building challenges, experiment with light and sound waves, and experience forces through hands-on activities.

The Mindworks area explores perception, optical illusions, and how brains process information. Every exhibit encourages active participation rather than passive viewing, embodying the Centre's philosophy that understanding science requires direct engagement with phenomena and processes.

Planetarium Shows

Scotland's only digital planetarium offers an immersive journey through space and time using state-of-the-art fulldome projection technology that surrounds visitors with stunning imagery of the cosmos. The 100-seat auditorium features a 15-meter diameter dome creating a 180-degree visual experience that places audiences within astronomical environments.

Shows vary throughout the year, covering topics from the solar system and constellation mythology to black holes, exoplanets, and the origins of the universe.

Live presentations by expert science communicators combine with pre-produced content featuring stunning space imagery from NASA, ESA, and astronomical observatories worldwide. Family shows introduce young children to astronomy through storytelling and exploration, while more advanced shows delve into current astronomical research and cosmological theories.

Special shows explore topics like space exploration missions, the search for extraterrestrial life, and climate science viewed from space.

The immersive experience conveys the scale, beauty, and wonder of the cosmos in ways flat-screen presentations cannot achieve, making complex astronomical concepts accessible through visual storytelling and creating powerful emotional connections to scientific knowledge.

Wonderworld (Early Years Area)

Wonderworld is a specially designed area for children under 8 years old, offering age-appropriate science experiences that develop early scientific thinking through play. This colorful, safe environment features scaled-down exhibits and activities focusing on fundamental concepts: water play exploring flow and volume, construction areas developing engineering skills, light tables for color mixing and shadow experiments, and sensory experiences introducing material properties.

The emphasis is on open-ended exploration rather than formal learning, allowing young children to discover scientific principles through experimentation and play.

Exhibits are designed to be accessible to toddlers and preschoolers, with robust construction, bright colors, and intuitive interactions. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to participate, with guidance available on how play activities connect to scientific concepts and learning objectives. The space provides relief for families with young children who might be overwhelmed by the main Science Mall, while ensuring early years visitors have meaningful science engagement appropriate to their developmental stage.

Regular programming includes storytime sessions incorporating scientific themes and facilitator-led activities introducing simple experiments.

Live Science Shows

Throughout each day, the Centre's expert science communicators present live shows demonstrating spectacular scientific phenomena and explaining complex concepts through engaging performance. Shows take place in the dedicated Science Show Theatre and throughout the Science Mall, covering diverse topics from chemical reactions and physics principles to biological systems and technological innovations.

Demonstrations include explosive chemistry experiments showing combustion and reactions, physics shows featuring liquid nitrogen demonstrations and dramatic illustrations of momentum and energy, and technology shows exploring robotics, computer programming, and engineering principles.

The communicators are skilled at making science accessible and entertaining, using humor, storytelling, and audience participation to maintain engagement while conveying accurate scientific information.
