The Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum tells the remarkable story of the county's fighting men and women across three centuries, from the formation of the Gloucestershire Regiment in the seventeenth century to the modern day. Housed in the beautifully restored Custom House at Gloucester Docks — one of Britain's finest Victorian dock complexes — the museum combines a dramatic setting with a deeply human collection that celebrates courage, sacrifice, and the bonds of regimental brotherhood.
The regiment's extraordinary history is brought to life through uniforms, medals, weapons, equipment, diaries, letters, and photographs collected over nearly a century of dedicated preservation. The Gloucestershire Regiment, known affectionately as the Glosters, served in virtually every major conflict in which Britain was engaged from the Napoleonic Wars onwards, and the museum traces this global story from Waterloo through the Crimea, South Africa, the trenches of the First World War, and the deserts of North Africa and jungles of Burma in the Second World War.
The collection's most celebrated focus is the Battle of the Imjin River during the Korean War of April 1951, one of the most heroic and tragic episodes in British military history. During three days and nights of intense fighting against overwhelming Chinese forces, the 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment held their ground on Hill 235 — immortalised as Gloster Hill — refusing to retreat and allowing the rest of the UN forces to withdraw. Of the 750 Glosters who fought, only 59 returned. The battle is commemorated in the United States Congress, which awarded the battalion a Presidential Unit Citation — the only time this honour has been given to a British unit. The museum's Imjin River displays are deeply moving and among the most powerful regimental commemorations anywhere in Britain.
The Royal Gloucestershire Hussars, the county's yeomanry cavalry regiment which served with distinction in both World Wars, are also represented in the collections, with particular attention to their remarkable role in the Middle East campaigns of the Second World War.
The museum's location within the Custom House adds enormously to the visitor experience. The building's Victorian industrial architecture provides a fitting counterpoint to the military displays, and the surrounding Gloucester Docks — with their restored warehouses and waterways — make the area a pleasure to explore before or after a museum visit.

The Imjin River and the Glorious Glosters
The museum's most celebrated and moving display covers the Battle of the Imjin River, April 1951 — one of the most heroic last stands in British military history.
During three days and nights of fighting in Korea, the 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment held Hill 235 (Gloster Hill) against massively superior Chinese forces, allowing the rest of the UN army to withdraw. Of 750 Glosters who fought, only 59 escaped.
The US Congress awarded the battalion a Presidential Unit Citation — the only such honour ever given to a British unit in Korea. The displays include personal accounts, equipment, photographs, and the citation itself.
Presidential Unit Citation
On display at the museum is the Presidential Unit Citation awarded by the United States Congress to the 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment for their extraordinary actions at the Imjin River in 1951. This is the only occasion on which a British military unit has received this most prestigious American military honour — a testament to the extraordinary sacrifice and courage of the Glosters during three days of impossible odds.
The citation and associated documentation form one of the most historically significant items in any British regimental museum.
Medals and Decorations Collection
The museum holds a remarkable collection of medals and decorations awarded to soldiers of the Gloucestershire Regiment and Royal Gloucestershire Hussars across three centuries of service.
Victoria Crosses, Military Crosses, Distinguished Service Orders, campaign medals from conflicts across the globe, and numerous foreign awards are displayed alongside the personal stories of the men who earned them. The collection represents a comprehensive visual record of the county regiment's distinguished service from the Napoleonic Wars to the late twentieth century.
First World War Galleries
The First World War galleries cover the Gloucestershire Regiment's extensive and costly service on the Western Front, at Gallipoli, and in other theatres between 1914 and 1918. Personal diaries, letters home, equipment, and trench art are displayed alongside photographs documenting the lives of ordinary soldiers from Gloucestershire.
The human scale of the displays — focusing on individual stories rather than abstract military history — makes this section of the museum particularly affecting.
The regiment suffered enormous casualties during the war, and the galleries treat this sacrifice with appropriate solemnity.
