The Goldstone Pumping Station itself was a masterpiece of Victorian engineering and architecture, built in 1866 to supply clean water to the rapidly growing seaside town of Brighton and Hove.

The building featured a distinctive Italianate tower and housed massive beam engines that pumped water from underground wells.
