Croft Castle in Herefordshire is a fascinating historic property combining a medieval fortified house with Georgian Gothic interiors and one of the most remarkable ancient parklands in England. The castle — its name preserved in the name of the Croft family who have lived here almost continuously since the Norman Conquest — stands on the Welsh Marches, a landscape of ancient hills, border history, and exceptional natural beauty.
The present building is a largely fourteenth and fifteenth century castle with corner towers, much remodelled in the eighteenth century when the interior was given fashionable Gothic Revival treatment. The resulting house has a distinctive character — medieval fabric clothed in Georgian Gothic decoration — that gives it an unusual charm. The rooms contain fine eighteenth-century furniture, family portraits, and collections relating to the Croft family's long history. Among the most notable family associations is the memory of Sir Richard Croft, physician to Prince Arthur (the elder brother of Henry VIII), and of the Whig politician Sir Herbert Croft.
The parkland surrounding Croft Castle is of exceptional ecological and historical importance, containing some of the most venerable ancient trees in England — including a spectacular avenue of approximately 350-year-old Spanish chestnuts, their vast gnarled trunks a testament to centuries of growth in the Herefordshire countryside. Ancient oaks, limes, and beeches of great age are scattered through the park, many of them veteran trees of national significance. The Iron Age hill fort of Croft Ambrey sits within the estate, offering sweeping views across the Welsh Marches into Wales and providing evidence of human occupation of this landscape for at least 2,500 years.
The walled garden has been restored by the National Trust and provides a productive and attractive kitchen garden experience. Waymarked walks through the estate allow visitors to explore the parkland, ancient trees, fishponds, and Croft Ambrey hill fort at their own pace.

The Spanish Chestnut Avenue
One of the most impressive tree avenues in England, Croft Castle's Spanish chestnut avenue comprises approximately 350-year-old trees whose vast, deeply furrowed trunks and spreading crowns create a cathedral-like atmosphere in the parkland. These veteran trees — planted in the mid-seventeenth century — are of national significance as ancient trees and provide habitat for rare invertebrates, fungi, and birds.
Walking among them, especially in autumn colour or winter silhouette, is one of Herefordshire's most memorable natural experiences.
Croft Ambrey Hill Fort
Rising above the castle parkland is the ancient hill fort of Croft Ambrey, occupied from around 550 BC to the first century AD — a remarkable 600-year continuous settlement on this commanding hilltop. The earthwork ramparts survive in excellent condition, enclosing a substantial area that once contained a densely packed Iron Age settlement.
A walk to the summit through Croft Castle's parkland rewards visitors with panoramic views across Herefordshire, the Welsh Marches, and into Wales on a clear day.
Gothic Revival Interiors
In the mid-eighteenth century the medieval interior of Croft Castle was remodelled in the fashionable Gothic Revival style, creating rooms of unusual and charming character. The Blue Room is particularly notable for its elaborate plasterwork ceiling — a fanciful design of Gothic tracery, fan vaulting motifs, and decorative devices executed in the mid-eighteenth century Strawberry Hill Gothic manner.
This combination of genuine medieval fabric with Georgian Gothic decoration gives Croft Castle a distinctive and appealing character unlike any other National Trust property.

The Croft family have held the castle almost continuously since the Norman Conquest, making their collection of family portraits a fascinating record of nine centuries of English history. Portraits span the Tudor, Stuart, Georgian, and Victorian periods, depicting family members who served as soldiers, courtiers, politicians, and clergymen.
Among the notable connections is Sir Richard Croft, court physician to Prince Arthur, and politicians of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
