Tate Liverpool is the North's leading contemporary and modern art gallery, housed in a spectacular converted warehouse on Liverpool's historic Albert Dock. As part of the Tate family of galleries (alongside Tate Britain, Tate Modern, and Tate St Ives), it holds a unique position as the only Tate gallery outside London, providing the North of England with access to Tate's national collection of British art from 1500 to present day and international modern art from 1900 onwards.
The gallery occupies a magnificent Grade I listed warehouse designed by Jesse Hartley and completed in 1846 as part of Albert Dock's revolutionary dockland development. The conversion to gallery space in 1988 by James Stirling retained the building's industrial character - exposed brick, cast iron columns, and dramatic warehouse spaces - while creating flexible contemporary galleries. This combination of historic architecture and cutting-edge contemporary art creates a unique visitor experience.
