The house is celebrated above all for the Rex Whistler Room, which contains the largest painted canvas in Britain. This extraordinary 58-foot trompe l'oeil mural, completed by the artist Rex Whistler in 1937, depicts an imaginary romantic seascape blending elements of real and fantastical architecture in a dazzling display of artistic virtuosity. Whistler was a close friend of the 6th Marquess and his work here represents the pinnacle of his mural painting career.
The first floor houses the Cavalry Museum dedicated to Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey, one of the most distinguished cavalry commanders of the Napoleonic Wars. He led the British cavalry charge at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, where a cannon shot shattered his right leg. The museum displays his famous artificial leg, military uniforms, medals, and personal effects, offering a vivid account of this remarkable military career.

The centrepiece is his famous artificial leg, one of the earliest articulated prosthetic limbs, required after a cannon shot shattered his right leg during the battle's closing stages.
The museum displays his military uniforms, medals including the Order of the Bath, personal correspondence, and artefacts from his distinguished career.
Wellington reportedly witnessed the injury and the exchange has become legendary.
Menai Strait Views and Snowdonia Panorama
The house commands one of the most spectacular settings in Wales, positioned on a gentle slope above the Menai Strait with uninterrupted views across the water to the mountains of Snowdonia. On clear days, the panorama encompasses Snowdon itself, the Carneddau range, and the Glyderau, creating a dramatic backdrop that changes character with the seasons, light, and weather.
