Sir John Soane's Museum is one of the most atmospheric and intriguing museums in London. The former home of neo-classical architect Sir John Soane (1753-1837), it has been a public museum since 1837 by Act of Parliament. The labyrinthine house is packed with antiquities, furniture, sculptures, architectural models, and over 30,000 architectural drawings.
Highlights include Hogarth's 'A Rake's Progress', an Egyptian sarcophagus, and ingenious spatial effects created by mirrors and light.
The house remains exactly as Soane left it - a time capsule of Georgian collecting and architectural genius.

- The house is small and can feel crowded - visit on weekday mornings for a quieter experience
- Wear flat shoes - there are many stairs and uneven historic floors
- Allow 90 minutes minimum - there's so much to see in this densely packed space

Hogarth's 'A Rake's Progress'
Complete series of eight paintings by William Hogarth (1733) showing the decline and fall of Tom Rakewell. One of the most important 18th-century narrative painting series.
The Sarcophagus of Seti I
Magnificent Egyptian alabaster sarcophagus of Pharaoh Seti I (c.1370 BC), carved from a single piece of translucent alabaster. When lit from within, it glows amber.
The Picture Room
Ingenious room with walls that unfold like cabinet doors to reveal three layers of paintings. A theatrical masterpiece of spatial design showcasing Soane's architectural genius.
The Breakfast Room
Small domed room with convex mirrors creating infinite reflections and illusions of space. Shows Soane's manipulation of light and perspective.
Collections
The museum holds Soane's extraordinary personal collection assembled over 60 years.
Over 30,000 architectural drawings including major holdings of Robert Adam and George Dance. Paintings include works by Hogarth, Canaletto, Turner, and Piranesi.
Ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman antiquities. Architectural fragments, casts, and models. The house itself is the greatest exhibit - an architectural masterpiece using mirrors, domes, and spatial illusions.
Every surface is covered with objects creating a cabinet of curiosities atmosphere.
