Highlights
The Raphael Cartoons
Seven full-scale designs painted by Raphael in 1515-16 for tapestries in the Sistine Chapel. Among the greatest treasures of the High Renaissance and the most important loan from the Royal Collection.
Tipu's Tiger
Life-size 18th-century wooden automaton depicting a tiger mauling a British soldier. Made for Tipu Sultan of Mysore around 1790, it contains a mechanical organ that simulates roars and screams.
The Great Bed of Ware
Famous 16th-century four-poster bed, nearly 11 feet wide. Mentioned in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, it could sleep up to 15 people and was a tourist attraction at an inn in Ware.
The Cast Courts
Spectacular Victorian halls containing full-size plaster casts of European masterpieces including Michelangelo's David and Trajan's Column, allowing 19th-century visitors to see works they couldn't travel to see.
