Kiplin Hall is a charming Jacobean mansion in the Vale of Mowbray, North Yorkshire, with a remarkable claim to historical significance: it was built by George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore, the man who founded the state of Maryland in the United States of America.
George Calvert began building Kiplin Hall around 1622 — the same year he obtained a patent for land in America. His descendants went on to establish the Maryland Colony in 1634, naming the Chesapeake Bay settlement after the English county of Henrietta Maria (Queen to Charles I). The Calvert family's Maryland Charter established principles of religious toleration that were ahead of their time and became foundational to American ideals of freedom of conscience. The connection between a modest Jacobean hall in the Yorkshire countryside and the founding of an American state is one of the most intriguing in English heritage.
The hall changed hands several times after the Calverts, passing to the Earls of Tyrconnel and eventually to the Carpenter family, each leaving their mark on the building and its contents. Victorian additions extended the house, and successive generations added their possessions, portraits and personalities to create the layered history that visitors encounter today. The house was rescued from dereliction in the 20th century and is now managed by the Kiplin Hall Trust, which continues the work of conservation and public access.
The hall is a compact and intimate building compared to Yorkshire's great palatial houses, and this intimacy is one of its greatest charms. Visitors experience a genuinely domestic historic interior — furnished rooms that feel lived-in rather than staged, personal collections assembled by real families over four centuries, and spaces that have the warmth of a home rather than the grandeur of a palace.
