Rotunda Museum

The Rotunda Museum in Scarborough is one of the oldest purpose-built museums in the world, a remarkable circular building constructed in 1829 specifically to display geological specimens in an innovative and scientifically rational way. Designed by the architect Richard Hey Sharp under the influence of William Smith — celebrated as the 'Father of English Geology' — the museum was conceived as a three-dimensional geological textbook where the very architecture illustrated the science it contained. Smith, who spent years living and working in Scarborough, proposed that the curved display cases lining the interior walls should be arranged to show geological strata in the same sequence as they appeared in the cliffs along the Yorkshire coast, allowing visitors to understand stratigraphy — the science of rock layers — by simply walking around the room.

William Smith's contribution to science cannot be overstated. His 1815 geological map of England, Wales, and part of Scotland was the first of its kind in the world, demonstrating that rock layers could be identified and correlated across great distances by the fossil species they contained. This insight — that fossils are the key to reading geological time — transformed geology from observation into science and laid the foundation for understanding Earth's deep history. Smith worked as a surveyor in Scarborough and befriended local naturalists and members of the Scarborough Philosophical Society who funded the Rotunda's construction. The museum stands as a direct legacy of his genius and of Scarborough's role in the birth of modern geology.

The collections gathered over nearly two centuries include outstanding fossil specimens from the Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks of the Yorkshire coast, a stretch of coastline internationally renowned for the quality and diversity of its fossils. Ammonites, belemnites, ichthyosaur remains, and plant fossils recovered from the cliffs and foreshore of the Yorkshire coast are displayed alongside minerals, rocks, and teaching specimens that have educated generations of students and visitors. The building itself, restored and reopened in 2008 following extensive renovation, is Grade II* listed and an architectural treasure as significant as the collections it houses.

Today the Rotunda continues its founding mission of making geology accessible to all visitors, with hands-on displays, fossil handling sessions, and interpretation that connects the spectacular specimens to the cliffs and beaches visitors can explore outside. The museum forms part of Scarborough's offer as a heritage destination alongside the adjacent Scarborough Art Gallery, Scarborough Castle, and the dramatic North Yorkshire coast that first inspired its creation.
