Shropshire Regimental Museum

The Shropshire Regimental Museum occupies a commanding position within Shrewsbury Castle, itself a magnificent red sandstone fortress originally built by Roger de Montgomery in 1074 and later remodelled by Thomas Telford. The museum tells the story of the county's infantry regiments from the late 17th century to the present day, covering over 300 years of military history through a remarkable collection of uniforms, weapons, medals, and personal artefacts.

The collection traces the lineage of the King's Shropshire Light Infantry, the Shropshire Yeomanry, and their successor regiments through conflicts spanning from the Napoleonic Wars to modern peacekeeping operations. Visitors can explore galleries dedicated to the regiment's involvement in the Peninsular War, both World Wars, and post-1945 campaigns. The displays bring to life the experiences of ordinary soldiers through personal letters, diaries, photographs, and equipment that survived the rigours of active service.

Particularly moving are the Victoria Cross displays, showcasing the supreme acts of bravery that earned Shropshire soldiers the nation's highest military honour. The museum also houses an impressive collection of regimental silver, colours, and ceremonial items that reflect the pride and traditions of these distinguished units.
