Southchurch Hall is a remarkably well-preserved medieval moated manor house, one of the finest examples of its type in Essex and a fascinating survival from the 13th century in the heart of modern Southend-on-Sea. The hall's origins date to around 1300, when it was built as the manor house of Southchurch, then a small agricultural settlement on the north bank of the Thames Estuary. Today the building stands almost miraculously intact within beautifully maintained grounds, offering visitors an atmospheric journey back to the medieval period.
The hall is a timber-framed building of the type known as an aisled hall, constructed using techniques that were already centuries old at the time of its building. Its great hall, with its impressive timber roof structure, is one of the best-preserved medieval domestic spaces in the region.
