Compton Verney is one of the most exciting art galleries outside London, occupying a magnificent Grade I listed mansion designed in part by the great neoclassical architect Robert Adam, set within 120 acres of Capability Brown parkland on the edge of the Cotswolds in south Warwickshire. The gallery brings together an extraordinary range of art spanning thousands of years and dozens of cultures, presented in beautifully restored historic rooms that provide a spectacular setting for world-class collections.
The building itself has a fascinating history. The original house dates from the early 18th century and was substantially remodelled by Robert Adam in the 1760s. The estate was acquired by the Compton Verney House Trust in 1993, and after a decade of restoration and conversion, the gallery opened to the public in 2004. The restoration won multiple awards and transformed a derelict building into one of the most beautiful gallery spaces in England.
The permanent collections at Compton Verney are deliberately diverse, reflecting a curatorial philosophy that prizes breadth and quality above conventional art-historical categorisation. The British Folk Art collection is nationally significant and one of the finest of its kind anywhere in the world, featuring paintings, sculpture, and decorative objects that represent the vernacular artistic traditions of Britain from the 17th century onwards.
The Chinese Bronzes gallery presents a superb collection of ancient Chinese ritual bronzes spanning more than two thousand years, from the Shang dynasty through to the Han period. These magnificent objects, used in ancestor veneration ceremonies, represent some of the greatest achievements of early Chinese civilisation. The Naples collection showcases Italian paintings from the 16th to 18th centuries, including outstanding examples by Neapolitan masters.
Beyond the permanent collections, Compton Verney maintains an ambitious programme of temporary exhibitions that have brought major shows to Warwickshire from galleries across Britain and the world. The parkland setting adds enormously to the visitor experience, with walking routes, a lake, and outdoor sculptures creating opportunities to extend the visit well beyond the gallery rooms. Compton Verney is a genuinely remarkable cultural destination that continues to surprise and delight its visitors.

💡 Visitor Tips
- The British Folk Art collection is truly extraordinary and unlike anything else in the country — allow plenty of time to explore it properly and read the fascinating stories behind the objects.
- Compton Verney is only open March to December (closed January and February), so check dates carefully before planning your visit.
- Allow at least half a day — the combination of permanent collections, temporary exhibitions, and parkland walks merits a leisurely visit. Many visitors spend the whole day.
- The gallery is most easily reached by car. It is 9 miles from Stratford-upon-Avon and signposted from the B4086. Parking is free with admission.
- The parkland is excellent for children who need to burn off energy between gallery visits. Family activity sheets and trail guides are available at the admissions desk.
- Combine your visit with a performance at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon — the combination makes for a superb cultural day in Warwickshire.
- The Orangery Cafe is genuinely excellent — arrive hungry and make it part of your visit rather than an afterthought.
- The Capability Brown parkland and the lake reflecting the house make spectacular photographs, particularly in autumn when the leaf colour is at its peak.
