Gainsborough's House in Sudbury, Suffolk is the birthplace and family home of Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788), one of the greatest British painters of the eighteenth century and a founding member of the Royal Academy. The museum holds the largest collection of Gainsborough's works in the world, displayed in the beautifully restored Georgian townhouse and its tranquil walled garden where the artist spent his childhood years.
Gainsborough was born in this house on Gainsborough Street and grew up within its walls before leaving for London and Bath to pursue a career that would make him celebrated across Europe. His genius encompassed both the grand portraiture that brought him fame and fortune — with clients including King George III and Queen Charlotte — and the lyrical landscape paintings to which he always returned with passionate intensity. Both aspects of his extraordinary talent are richly represented in the permanent collection.
The collection includes oil paintings, drawings, and prints by Gainsborough spanning his entire career, from his early Suffolk landscapes of the 1740s to the shimmering late works that anticipate the painterly freedoms of the nineteenth century. Alongside Gainsborough's own works, the museum displays an important group of paintings by his contemporaries, prints and drawings from his circle, and a rich collection of personal and family material.
A major redevelopment completed in 2022 transformed Gainsborough's House into a world-class museum and print study centre, adding significant new gallery spaces, conservation studios visible to visitors, a dedicated print room, and a new learning centre. The development, designed to the highest standards of environmental sustainability, has won widespread critical acclaim and several prestigious architectural awards.
The museum's print room is one of its most distinctive features, housing an exceptional collection of prints — including many by Gainsborough himself — that can be accessed by visitors and researchers alike in a purpose-designed study environment. Gainsborough was an innovative printmaker as well as a painter, and this dimension of his work is explored with particular care.
