Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life

Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life is an award-winning independent museum in the heart of Tiverton, dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of the town and the wider mid-Devon region. Housed in a handsome Victorian school building on Becks Square, the museum has grown since its foundation in 1960 into one of the most comprehensive and engaging local history museums in the South West, offering a welcoming and informative experience for visitors of all ages.

The museum's collections encompass an extraordinary range of objects and stories spanning over 10,000 years of human activity in mid-Devon. Prehistoric flint tools give way to Bronze Age metalwork, Roman coins, and Saxon artefacts in the archaeology galleries, before the narrative moves into the medieval and post-medieval periods with material relating to Tiverton's important wool and cloth trade, its civic life, and its parish churches.

The crown jewel of the museum's industrial collections is the material relating to Heathcoat's lace factory, one of the most significant industrial stories in Devon's history. John Heathcoat, forced to flee the Luddite riots that destroyed his Loughborough mill in 1816, relocated his revolutionary lace-making machinery to Tiverton and established a factory that would transform the town's economy and employ generations of local people. The museum holds original machinery, lace samples, workers' tools, and documents that tell this remarkable story of industrial ingenuity and community resilience.

Agricultural history forms another major strand of the collections, with an outstanding range of farming implements, tools, and vehicles that document the changing face of Devon farming from the 18th century onwards. The museum's notable collection of farm wagons — distinctive brightly painted Devon wagons of the 19th century — is particularly impressive and has attracted visitors from across the country.

Beyond its outstanding permanent collections, the museum runs an active programme of temporary exhibitions, events, talks, and activities that keep the visitor experience fresh and engage the local community throughout the year. The museum is entirely volunteer-run and is an excellent example of what a dedicated and passionate local community can achieve in the service of shared heritage.
