Topsham Museum

Topsham Museum is a charming and warmly welcoming local history museum occupying a beautiful 17th-century merchant's house called Holman House on The Strand — Topsham's historic waterfront street that once bustled with maritime trade. The museum captures the character and history of one of Devon's most distinctive small towns, which grew wealthy through centuries of trade with Holland, the Baltic and beyond.

Topsham's history is written in its unusual architecture. The town is famous for its Dutch-gabled houses, a direct legacy of the trade that linked it to the Netherlands in the 17th and 18th centuries. Merchants who sailed to Rotterdam returned with bricks as ballast and Dutch craftsmen to build new homes in the prevailing Dutch style — giving Topsham a streetscape unique in Devon and unlike anywhere else in the West Country. The museum explores the origins of this distinctive character and the lives of the merchants, sailors and craftsmen who created it.

The collections cover Topsham's prosperous shipbuilding industry, which built vessels for trade and naval use from yards along the Exe; the wider seafaring heritage of the town including navigation, trade goods and maritime craft; the Dutch-influenced architecture that makes Topsham so visually distinctive; and the natural history of the Exe Estuary, one of the most important wetland habitats in south-west England.

The museum is run entirely by dedicated volunteers who bring personal knowledge and genuine enthusiasm to their roles as guides and interpreters. Exhibits include ship models of great skill and detail, genuine maritime artefacts, reconstructions of local trades and industries, domestic objects from Topsham households across the centuries, and a recreated Victorian parlour that evokes the domestic life of the prosperous merchant families who shaped the town. A small but well-curated natural history gallery celebrates the estuary environment on the town's doorstep.
