Torre Abbey is one of Torquay's most significant and captivating historic sites, combining the atmospheric ruins of a medieval monastery with a beautifully restored historic house and a rich collection of fine and decorative art. Founded in 1196 by Premonstratensian monks, the abbey flourished for over three centuries before the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII. The surviving medieval structures, including the tithe barn known as the Spanish Barn and the gatehouse, bear silent witness to this long monastic history.
Following the Dissolution in 1539, the property passed into private hands and was gradually transformed into a Georgian and Victorian mansion. The Cary family, who acquired Torre Abbey in 1662, lived here for over two centuries, and it was during this period that the house gained much of its present character. The family's influence is visible throughout the building, from the elegant Georgian rooms to the Victorian additions that reflect the tastes of successive generations.
Torquay Borough Council purchased Torre Abbey in 1930 and converted it into a museum and art gallery. Today it houses a distinguished collection of fine art, including works by significant British artists such as Holman Hunt, Burne-Jones, and Edwin Long. The Pre-Raphaelite holdings are particularly noteworthy, making Torre Abbey an important destination for lovers of Victorian painting.
The gardens surrounding the abbey are equally rewarding, featuring formal parterres, a cactus house, and the romantic ruins of the medieval chapter house and fishpond. - Arrive when doors open at 10:00 to explore the house before visitor numbers build. The gardens and ruins can be enjoyed at any time.
- Allow a full half-day or more to do justice to the house, galleries, medieval ruins, Spanish Barn, and gardens. There is far more here than most visitors expect.
- Don't miss the Spanish Barn — one of the largest medieval tithe barns in Devon, with a remarkable Armada history. It is easy to overlook but unmissable.
- Torre railway station is slightly closer than Torquay station and involves a pleasant downhill walk to the seafront. Both are straightforward on foot.
- The Agatha Christie room and family activity trails make this an excellent choice for older children with an interest in mysteries and detective stories.
- The Cactus House is a hidden gem not to be missed. The collection of cacti and succulents is one of the most extensive in the South West.
- Combine your visit with a walk along the seafront to Torquay Harbour or a trip to Cockington Country Park for a full day in the area.
