Fyvie Castle is among the grandest and most historically significant castles in Scotland — a magnificent baronial pile in the heart of Aberdeenshire that embodies over seven centuries of Scottish history, architecture, and aristocratic ambition. With its extraordinary southerly facade of five great towers, each bearing the name of a family that owned the castle, Fyvie stands as a uniquely layered monument to the successive dynasties that shaped Scottish history from the medieval period to the 20th century.
The castle's origins stretch back to the 13th century, when it served as a royal hunting seat. The five towers — Preston, Meldrum, Seton, Gordon, and Leith — were each built or substantially remodelled by a different family across five centuries, creating a building of extraordinary architectural complexity and variety. The result is one of the finest examples of Scottish baronial architecture in existence, a style characterised by its towers, turrets, stepped gables, and dramatic skyline silhouettes.
Fyvie's interior is equally magnificent. The great wheel stair — the finest of its kind in Scotland — spirals up through the castle's core, while the elaborately decorated rooms reflect the tastes and aspirations of successive owners. The late Victorian and Edwardian interiors created by Alexander Leith, 1st Baron Leith of Fyvie, are particularly impressive, filled with fine European paintings, tapestries, arms and armour, and decorative art of the highest quality.
The portrait collection at Fyvie is of national significance, containing important works by Raeburn, Opie, Romney, and Lawrence, as well as paintings by Gainsborough and Batoni. These pictures, acquired by Lord Leith on the international art market at the turn of the 20th century, make Fyvie one of the most important repositories of fine portraiture in Scotland.
The National Trust for Scotland has cared for Fyvie since 1984, opening the castle and its grounds to visitors and ensuring the preservation of its outstanding collections and architecture for future generations. The surrounding designed landscape, loch, and estate walks add to the experience of a truly exceptional Scottish castle.

- Arrive at opening time to explore the castle interior before the guided tours begin in earnest. The early morning light on the southern facade is outstanding.
- Include time for a walk around the loch after visiting the castle — the reflections of the facade in the loch are one of the great views of Aberdeenshire.
- Ask the room guides to point out the Raeburn portraits — they are among the finest paintings on public display in the North East of Scotland and should not be overlooked.
- Ask staff about the castle's remarkable legends — the Grey Lady, the Weeping Stones, and the sealed room are all part of Fyvie's extraordinary folklore tradition.
- Before entering, take time to study the south facade from the forecourt. The five towers and the details of the carved stonework repay careful attention and are best appreciated at a distance.
- Fyvie is very much a car destination. Car hire from Aberdeen for the day allows you to combine Fyvie with nearby Haddo House or Castle Fraser for an outstanding Aberdeen day out.

The principal room tour tells the story of the five great families who built and shaped Fyvie Castle across five centuries — the Prestons, Meldrums, Setons, Gordons, and Leiths — through the architecture, furnishings, and collections they left behind.
Lord Leith's Art Collection
The portrait collection assembled by Alexander Leith at the turn of the 20th century is displayed throughout the castle's principal rooms, including works by Raeburn, Gainsborough, Romney, Lawrence, and Batoni.
