Stourhead is one of the greatest achievements of 18th-century British art and design, a Palladian house of exceptional quality set within a landscape garden that is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of the English landscape style ever created. Owned and managed by the National Trust and situated near the village of Stourton in the heart of Wiltshire, Stourhead draws visitors from around the world who come to experience its extraordinary combination of architecture, art, and designed landscape.
The estate was created by the Hoare banking family, who built the house between 1721 and 1725 to designs by Colen Campbell — a leading exponent of Palladian architecture in England. The house was later extended and its interior enriched with a magnificent collection of paintings, furniture, sculpture, and decorative arts that reflects the wealth, taste, and Grand Tour education of its aristocratic owners.
The landscape garden, created from 1741 onwards by Henry Hoare II, is arguably even more celebrated than the house. Drawing inspiration from classical landscape painting — particularly the works of Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin — Hoare created an idealised Arcadian landscape around an artificial lake fed by the River Stour. The garden is scattered with temples, grottoes, bridges, and inscriptions that create an allegorical journey through classical mythology and literature, inviting visitors to reflect on beauty, memory, and the human relationship with nature.
The four seasons bring dramatically different moods to Stourhead's landscape. Spring brings a riot of rhododendrons and azaleas in brilliant colours; summer offers lush greenery and perfect reflections in the lake; autumn transforms the valley into a tapestry of gold, amber, and crimson; winter reveals the pure architectural lines of the temples against bare trees. The garden is regarded as one of the great year-round destinations in the National Trust's portfolio.
The house contains outstanding collections of Chippendale furniture — including pieces commissioned directly from Thomas Chippendale — Regency-era furnishings, paintings by Raphael, Titian, and other European masters, and fine porcelain. The library is a particularly spectacular interior, housing thousands of volumes accumulated by the scholarly Hoare family over generations.

💡 Visitor Tips
- For peak autumn colour, visit in mid to late October — the reflected colours in the lake are breathtaking. For rhododendrons, aim for late April to early June. Both periods are extremely popular so arrive early.
- Allow a full day — the garden circuit alone takes 2 hours at a relaxed pace and the house adds at least another hour. Arrive early to make the most of the estate.
- Walk the complete garden circuit for the full experience of Henry Hoare's allegorical landscape. The view from the dam across to the Pantheon is one of the finest garden vistas in England.
- The garden offers extraordinary photographic opportunities in all seasons. Dawn light on the lake before the crowds arrive is particularly magical — arrive at opening time for the best conditions.
- Children enjoy the garden discovery trail and spotting the various temples and garden buildings around the lake. The model boats for hire on the lake are popular on summer days.
- King Alfred's Tower involves 205 steps and the view from the top is outstanding on a clear day. Check the tower is open before making the 1-mile walk from the main garden.
- The estate is most easily accessed by car from the A303. Arrive well before midday on peak autumn and spring weekends — the car park fills completely and late-arriving visitors may be turned away.
- If you are a National Trust member you can visit Stourhead as many times as you like at no extra charge, making it ideal for experiencing the garden in different seasons throughout the year.

Collections
The house contains outstanding collections of English and continental furniture including major Chippendale pieces, Old Master and British paintings, sculpture, porcelain, and silver accumulated by the Hoare banking family from the early 18th to the early 20th century. The library holds thousands of volumes and is a remarkable intact Georgian book collection.

The Landscape Garden
The 18th-century garden circuit of approximately 2.5 miles around the central lake, passing the Pantheon, Temple of Flora, Temple of Apollo, the Grotto, Bristol High Cross, and other garden buildings in their designed landscape setting.
King Alfred's Tower
The triangular Gothic folly on the ridge above the garden, built 1762-72, with interpretive displays about King Alfred and the history of the Stourhead estate, and panoramic views across three counties from the top.
