Watford Museum is the principal museum and gallery for the town of Watford and the surrounding area of South West Hertfordshire. Occupying a handsome Victorian mansion on the High Street, the museum has been serving the local community since 1981, offering free access to wide-ranging collections covering fine art, social history, local archaeology, and the distinctive industries and communities that have shaped this important Hertfordshire town.
The fine art collection is one of the museum's principal strengths, and includes works of considerable quality from the 17th century to the present day. The collection is particularly notable for its paintings by Sir Hubert von Herkomer, the Bavarian-born artist who made Bushey, just two miles away, his home and the centre of his celebrated art school.
