Pannett Art Gallery occupies a purpose-built building within the verdant setting of Pannett Park, opened in 1928 as a gift to the town by Robert Pannett, a local solicitor whose bequest funded both the park and the gallery. Set on a hillside overlooking Whitby's rooftops towards the sea, the gallery enjoys one of the most atmospheric locations of any small museum in Yorkshire.
The permanent collection is anchored by a remarkable group of works by George Weatherill (1810–1890), Whitby's most celebrated artist, whose atmospheric watercolours and oils capture the town's fishing harbour, the ruined abbey on the headland, and the ever-changing moods of the North Sea. Weatherill's intimate knowledge of the sea and sky, developed over decades of working on the Yorkshire coast, gives his paintings an authenticity and emotional depth that continues to resonate with visitors.
