Yate and District Heritage Centre is an independently run community heritage centre dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Yate and the surrounding district of South Gloucestershire. Established in 1995 and operated on a not-for-profit basis by a dedicated team of volunteers and local historians, the centre is a vital resource for local people wanting to understand the deep and often overlooked history of this area on the edge of the Cotswolds.
Yate's history stretches far back beyond its modern incarnation as a post-war new town. The district was inhabited in prehistoric times, and the area's rich agricultural and industrial past is brought to life through the centre's collections. Yate was long known for its coal mining heritage — the South Gloucestershire coalfield extended through this part of the Bristol coalfield region — and the centre preserves important records, photographs, and artefacts relating to the collieries and the communities they sustained.
The rapid development of Yate as a planned new town following the Second World War is a major focus of the centre's work. The transformation of a rural village and small market town into one of the largest planned settlements in the South West is documented through planning records, oral history testimonies, domestic objects, and a remarkable photographic archive that captures the town's dramatic physical transformation across just a few decades.
