Bankfield Museum is one of the finest regional museums in Yorkshire, housed in an imposing Victorian mansion that was once the home of Edward Akroyd, one of the most powerful and philanthropic textile magnates of the 19th century. Built in 1867 in the Italianate style as the crowning achievement of Akroyd's remarkable career, Bankfield was converted to a public museum in 1887 — making it one of the earliest purpose-adapted museums in northern England. Today it is managed by Calderdale Council and serves as a major cultural landmark for the town of Halifax.
The museum's most celebrated holding is its outstanding textile collection — one of the finest in Britain and regarded internationally as an important resource for the study of world fabric cultures. The collection spans thousands of years and dozens of cultures, encompassing everything from ancient Egyptian linen to South American weavings, from Ottoman silk embroidery to West African kente cloth, from Kashmiri shawls to the mechanically produced Yorkshire worsted that made Calderdale famous. The breadth and depth of the collection reflects Halifax's position at the heart of the British textile trade, where merchants and manufacturers had dealings with suppliers, customers, and competitors across the globe.
Alongside the textile collections, Bankfield houses the regimental collection of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding), one of the British Army's most distinguished infantry regiments. This collection of uniforms, medals, weapons, silver, and personal mementos is displayed in dedicated galleries within the museum, telling the story of the regiment from its formation in 1702 through to its amalgamation in 2006. The regiment's battle honours encompass Waterloo, the Crimean War, the Boer War, both World Wars, and the Falklands — a roll call that represents three centuries of British military history.
The Bankfield building itself is a further attraction — its elaborate Italianate architecture, ornate interiors, and spectacular great hall retain much of their original Victorian splendour, providing an opulent setting for the collections. The museum is free to enter and is a central part of Calderdale's cultural life, hosting regular temporary exhibitions and community programmes.

Bankfield's collection of world textiles is one of the most important in any British regional museum, spanning thousands of years and cultures from ancient Egypt to contemporary West Africa, from Ottoman Turkey to pre-Columbian Peru. Accumulated by Halifax textile merchants with global trading connections, the collection reflects the town's central role in the Victorian wool trade and the international networks it generated.
Individual pieces of extraordinary quality — including rare Islamic silk brocades, Indian court embroideries, and early European silk weaving — are displayed in purpose-designed galleries with excellent interpretation.
British Textile Heritage Galleries
Alongside the world collections, Bankfield holds a superb collection of British textiles that traces the history of the industry from medieval hand-weaving through the industrial transformation of the 18th and 19th centuries to 20th-century manufacturing. The West Riding wool trade — which made Halifax, Bradford, and Huddersfield the textile capitals of the world — is examined in depth, with examples of the fabrics that built the fortunes of manufacturers like Edward Akroyd himself.
Weaving equipment, pattern books, and trade samples complement the fabric displays.
Duke of Wellington's Regimental Museum
Housed within Bankfield, the regimental collection of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding) tells the story of one of the British Army's most celebrated infantry regiments over three centuries. The collection includes magnificent dress uniforms from different eras, an impressive medal collection spanning every major British conflict from Waterloo to the Falklands, regimental silver of outstanding quality, weapons, portraits, and personal items belonging to officers and men.
The regiment's motto 'Virtutis Fortuna Comes' (Fortune is the Companion of Valour) is reflected in three hundred years of distinguished service.
Akroyd's Mansion — Victorian Splendour
The Bankfield building itself is a major attraction. Edward Akroyd's 1867 mansion was designed to impress and to declare the cultural aspirations of a self-made Victorian millionaire. The great hall, with its painted decoration, marble columns, and elaborate stonework, retains the opulence of its original construction.
The building's Italianate exterior — drawing on the North Italian Renaissance villas that Akroyd admired — set Bankfield apart from its Victorian neighbours and announced its owner's status to the world.
The building is Grade II* listed.
