Shibden Hall is one of West Yorkshire's most remarkable historic houses — a half-timbered medieval manor dating from around 1420 that has become internationally celebrated as the home of Anne Lister (1791–1840), one of the most extraordinary figures in British social history. Known as 'Gentleman Jack' for her masculine dress and manner, Anne Lister was a landowner, businesswoman, traveller, and diarist whose coded diaries detailed her passionate relationships with women in such frank and explicit terms that she is now widely recognised as the 'first modern lesbian'. Shibden Hall and the Anne Lister story attracted global attention through the acclaimed BBC/HBO television series 'Gentleman Jack' (2019–2022), created by Sally Wainwright and starring Suranne Jones.
The hall itself is a building of great architectural beauty and historical interest independent of its Anne Lister associations. The timber-framed core dates from the early 15th century, with successive additions and alterations reflecting the tastes and means of different owners over four centuries. Anne Lister herself undertook significant work at Shibden in the 1830s, enlarging and gothicising the hall to reflect her own personality and ambitions. The result is a building with extraordinary historical layering — medieval timbers behind Victorian Gothic stonework, original plaster alongside Anne Lister's improvements.
The principal rooms are furnished to reflect the period of Anne Lister's occupation in the 1830s and 1840s, with displays exploring her life, her diaries, her business ventures (she was an astute coal mine operator and landowner), and her relationships. The diaries — written partly in a code she devised combining Greek letters, mathematical symbols, and punctuation — are the central document of her story. Cracked in the 19th century by John Lister and a Halifax antiquarian, the diaries were only fully published in the 21st century and have transformed understanding of same-sex desire in early 19th-century England.
Shibden Hall is set in 90 acres of parkland and gardens that include a boating lake, miniature railway (seasonal), woodland walks, and formal gardens. The grounds are free to enter and are a beloved public park for the people of Halifax. The hall itself charges for entry. Together, Shibden represents one of the most significant and emotionally powerful heritage destinations in Yorkshire — a place where history, landscape, and a truly exceptional individual life converge.

Anne Lister's Secret Diaries
Anne Lister kept detailed diaries from 1806 until her death in 1840 — approximately four million words in total. Around one-sixth of the text was written in a code she devised, combining Greek letters, mathematical signs, and punctuation marks, in which she recorded her emotional and sexual life in frank and intimate detail.
The diaries are the primary historical document establishing Lister as a woman who pursued relationships with women openly and with a clear sense of her own identity.
Interpretive displays at Shibden explore the diaries and their significance in depth, including facsimile pages of the coded text.
Anne Lister's Rooms and Personality
The rooms furnished in the period of Anne Lister's occupation convey her remarkable personality — intellectually voracious, physically vigorous, socially ambitious, and determined to assert her identity on her own terms in an era that provided no framework for it. She read Greek and Latin, travelled extensively (she died while journeying in Georgia), managed her estates and collieries with shrewd commercial intelligence, and conducted her personal relationships with the same directness and determination she brought to everything else.

The Medieval Hall and Architecture
Shibden Hall's architectural core is a medieval open hall dating from around 1420 — one of the finest surviving examples of this building type in West Yorkshire. The great hall, with its open timber roof structure and massive fireplace, gives a vivid impression of medieval domestic arrangements before the development of enclosed chimneys and upper floors transformed domestic architecture.
Successive additions from the 15th to the 19th centuries have given the hall its current complex and characterful exterior of timber framing and gritstone, making it a building of great architectural interest in its own right.
Gentleman Jack — Television and Global Recognition
The BBC/HBO television series 'Gentleman Jack' (2019–2022), created and written by Sally Wainwright and starring Suranne Jones as Anne Lister, brought Shibden Hall and its remarkable owner to a global audience. Filmed partly at Shibden itself, the series dramatised Anne Lister's courtship of Ann Walker and her management of the Shibden estate and collieries in the late 1830s.
The production introduced Anne Lister to millions of viewers who had never heard of her, and Shibden now receives significant numbers of pilgrimage visitors from across the world who come specifically for the Gentleman Jack connection.
