Oriel Ynys Môn is Anglesey's flagship gallery and heritage centre, a purpose-built cultural venue that has served as the island's principal showcase for art, archaeology, and natural history since its opening in 1991. Located on the outskirts of Llangefni, the county town of Anglesey, the gallery occupies a striking modern building set within pleasant grounds and offers an ambitious programme of permanent collections and changing temporary exhibitions that reflect the richness of Anglesey's culture, history, and landscape.
The gallery takes its name from the island itself — Ynys Môn is the Welsh name for Anglesey — and this sense of island identity permeates the whole institution. Anglesey has been inhabited since the Mesolithic period and has been at various times a centre of Druidic religion, a breadbasket of the Roman Empire, a crucible of early Christianity, a Norman fortress, and in more recent centuries a community shaped by farming, quarrying, and seafaring. All these layers of history are explored through the heritage galleries with intelligence and care.
The gallery is particularly celebrated for its holdings relating to two artists who defined the visual culture of 20th-century Wales. Charles Tunnicliffe, born in Cheshire but deeply attached to Anglesey where he lived for the last thirty years of his life, is represented by a significant collection of his meticulously observed wildlife paintings and drawings — some of the finest natural history art produced in Britain in the 20th century. Sir Kyffin Williams, Anglesey-born and one of the most important Welsh artists of his generation, is represented by a substantial collection of his bold, palette-knife landscapes that capture the dramatic light and topography of north Wales.
Beyond these fine art collections, Oriel Ynys Môn houses important archaeological material from the island's prehistoric and Roman periods, extensive natural history collections, and displays exploring the Welsh language, culture, and traditions of Môn — the Mother of Wales, as the island was historically known for the high quality of its agricultural produce that fed the surrounding mainland.

- The Kyffin Williams and Tunnicliffe galleries are world-class — allow plenty of time to savour both collections.
- Admission is free and parking is free on site, making this exceptional value. A café on site makes it easy to build in a break.
- Combine with a visit to Beaumaris Castle, one of the finest medieval castles in Europe, just 7 miles east on the Menai Strait.
- Weekday mornings are quietest. Summer afternoons can be busy with tour groups and family visitors.
- The gallery has free parking on site. From the A55, follow signs for Llangefni and then brown tourist signs to Oriel Ynys Môn.
- Children are particularly engaged by the Tunnicliffe wildlife drawings — ask for family trail sheets to guide younger visitors through the galleries.
- Anglesey has magnificent coastal scenery — after your gallery visit, drive to Newborough Beach or Holy Island for some of the finest coastal walking in Wales.
