Kingston Lacy is one of the most significant historic houses in the south of England, a grand seventeenth-century country house set within 8,500 acres of the Dorset countryside near Wimborne Minster. Built between 1663 and 1665 to designs by Sir Roger Pratt for Sir Ralph Bankes, whose family had lost their ancestral home at Corfe Castle during the Civil War, the house was later remodelled by Sir Charles Barry in the 1830s in an Italianate style that gives it the dramatic character it retains today.
The house was given to the National Trust in 1982 by Ralph Bankes, the last of his family, along with its remarkable contents — one of the greatest private bequests in the Trust's history. The art collection within is of national importance, featuring works by Rubens, Titian, Raphael, Van Dyck, Velázquez, and Brueghel, assembled by the Bankes family over several generations. The Spanish Room, lined with gilded leather wall hangings, is considered one of the finest rooms of its kind in England.
The Egyptian collection is another outstanding feature, brought to Kingston Lacy by William John Bankes in the early nineteenth century following his extensive travels in Egypt and the Near East. The collection includes a significant obelisk on the lawn — one of very few in Britain — along with papyri, sculptures, and artefacts that formed part of the scholarly enterprise by which Bankes contributed to the early decipherment of hieroglyphics.
The estate encompasses formal gardens, a parkland grazed by a herd of Red Devon cattle, woodland walks, and the Iron Age hillfort at Badbury Rings. The gardens feature a fernery, kitchen garden, and spectacular displays of snowdrops in late winter and rhododendrons in spring. Kingston Lacy offers an exceptionally rich visitor experience across every season.
National Trust membership provides free entry to Kingston Lacy. Non-members pay admission. Pre-booking is strongly recommended for house access, particularly at weekends and during school holidays.

- Do not miss the Spanish Room — it is one of the most extraordinary interiors in any National Trust property and the gilded leather panels are unlike anything else in England.
- Pre-booking for the house is strongly recommended, especially at weekends and during school holidays. Garden visits do not require booking.
- Allow a full day if you want to visit the house, explore the gardens, and walk to Badbury Rings. Spring is spectacular for snowdrops and rhododendrons on the drives.
- Kingston Lacy is well signposted from Wimborne Minster on the B3082. Use the postcode BH21 4EA for satellite navigation and follow the brown National Trust signs.
- Children love the Egyptian obelisk on the lawn and the parkland is excellent for running around. Family trails and activities are usually available at the visitor reception.
- Badbury Rings on the estate is worth the walk for its dramatic ramparts and sweeping views across Dorset — it is freely accessible to all visitors and non-visitors alike.
- The house exterior is beautifully photographed in morning light. No flash photography inside; the rooms are well lit and interiors photograph well without it.

Collections
Kingston Lacy holds one of the finest art collections in National Trust care, comprising Old Masters by Rubens, Titian, Raphael, Van Dyck, Velázquez, and others, alongside important Egyptian antiquities, historic photographs, maps, and an extensive library. The collection was bequeathed to the Trust by Ralph Bankes in 1982 and represents the accumulated acquisitions of seven generations of the Bankes family.
