The museum was established in 1961 by the East Dorset Antiquarian Society and is today run as an independent not-for-profit organisation, holding full Museum Accreditation. Its collections tell the story of Wimborne Minster and the surrounding East Dorset countryside from prehistoric times through to the twentieth century, with particular strengths in domestic life, local trades, and rural crafts.
