The Rifles Museum

The Rifles Museum in Winchester tells the story of one of the British Army's most celebrated infantry regiments, tracing its origins through the historic rifle regiments that were amalgamated to form The Rifles in 2007. Housed in Peninsula Barracks on Romsey Road — itself a site of deep military heritage — the museum stands as a fitting tribute to the soldiers who have served in these regiments across more than two centuries of British military history.

The Rifles regiment was formed from the merger of five distinguished infantry regiments: The Devonshire and Dorset Light Infantry, The Light Infantry, The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Light Infantry, The Royal Green Jackets, and The King's Royal Rifle Corps. The museum brings together collections from these predecessor regiments, preserving their unique identities and traditions within the unified story of The Rifles.

Visitors can explore galleries covering some of the most significant campaigns in British military history, from the Napoleonic Wars and the Peninsula Campaign — which gave Peninsula Barracks its name — through to the Crimean War, the Boer War, both World Wars, and more recent operational deployments in Northern Ireland, the Falklands, the Gulf, Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The collections span uniforms, weapons, medals, personal diaries, letters, and campaign equipment that bring individual soldiers' experiences vividly to life.

The museum holds an exceptional collection of Victoria Crosses awarded to soldiers of the predecessor regiments, along with a wealth of silver, colours, drums, and ceremonial items. The Light Infantry tradition — with its emphasis on speed, marksmanship, and individual initiative — is a recurring theme throughout the displays, explaining how this distinctive military culture shaped British infantry tactics from the Napoleonic era to the present.
